With 2021 coming to an end, have you decided what your resolutions are going to be in the new year? New Year’s resolutions are a fun tradition that helps you come up with ways to take better care of yourself, and that includes your oral health. Read on for five ideas for New Year’s resolutions that will help you achieve better oral health and a brighter, more beautiful smile in 2022!

#1: Do a Better Job of Brushing and Flossing

We all know that we need to brush and floss, but how often do you actually do it? If the answer is anything less than brushing twice and flossing once per day, there’s some definite room for improvement! Take care of your smile by brushing for two minutes in the morning and two minutes before bed. Additionally, floss your teeth at least once per day to remove gunk stuck between your pearly whites and lessen your chances of developing oral health issues like decay.

#2: Visit the Dentist

Life can get pretty hectic, but you should always make a point of visiting the dentist. At only two visits per year, the time commitment is minimal and it will help you keep your teeth healthy and bright. During your routine dental checkups, your dentist will be able to identify any oral health issues you have and come up with a plan to treat them. They will also clean do a deep clean of your teeth to lessen your chances of developing other oral health issues in the future and make you feel more confident in your smile.

#3: Cut Out Tobacco

Tobacco can do a lot of harm to your body, including your oral health. Tobacco use sharply increases your chances of developing gum disease, oral cancer, and a number of other cancers. Make a point of eliminating this bad habit in the new year. If you need help, look for support groups or online resources that make it easier to quit.

#4: Conquer Dry Mouth

The dryer your mouth is, the higher your chances of developing oral health issues are. Make sure to drink plenty of water to keep cavities and gum disease at bay. Additionally, a visit to your dentist will allow them to make sure you don’t have an underlying oral health condition that’s causing a decrease in saliva production.

#5: Brighten Your Smile

If you can’t make it through the day without your morning coffee, you may have unsightly stains that you’re looking to eliminate. Try to cut back on beverages like tea, coffee, cola, and red wine that can stain your smile. You may also want to speak with your dentist to see what teeth whitening or cosmetic dental options they have available.

It’s not too late to start taking better care of your smile! Set a New Year’s resolution to show your pearly whites the love they deserve. Before you know it, you’ll be sporting a grin you can’t help but be proud of!
